Future Forces Project

In 2008, CNP released a major report entitled Agility Across the Spectrum: A Future Force Blueprint. This comprehensive report drew upon the expertise of an advisory group comprised of some of the nation's top military scholars, retired front line officers from our current wars, interviews with nearly 50 subject matter experts, and meetings with and presentations by leading policy makers, active duty commanders, retired flag officers, industry experts, Congressional staff and executive branch officials.  Based upon this process, and taking into account the mounting financial constraints and multiplying national security threats facing the United States, CNP proposed a series of recommendations to be implemented along a prioritized timeline, many of which have already been adopted by the military and the new administration in its first few months:  winning today's wars, supporting the troops and expanding the forces, preventing future conflicts, and winning future wars.

Building upon the success of this report, CNP is executing a targeted three-part plan tackling the most important and timely issues that will be faced by the new Administration and Congress, namely:

1) Winning Today's Wars: What are the most important lessons to be taken from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and how can those lessons be applied to future conflicts?

2) Defense Reform: How can the Department of Defense improve its procurement process and which weapons systems are the most integral to our nation's security? What is the proper configuration of the Coast Guard at a time when homeland security is so vital?

3) Capability Gaps and Regional Security Challenges: What capabilities and regions have been given short shrift in current plans? Is the nation preparing enough to counter the cyber threat, economic war, or long- range strike? What changes in doctrine, planning, or acquisition can close these gaps?

Future Forces Project Advisory Group

CNP's Future Forces Advisory Group brings together top experts and practitioners on defense reform, national security and strategic thinking.  The goal of the Center's Future Forces Project is to examine the most important defense issues occurring today and identify the top challenges that will be emerging in the future; the Advisory Group provides invaluable guidance and support in this effort.
