A NSSG High-Level Roundtable with Adm. John Lehman

September 7, 2007

9/11 Commissioners Rep. Tim Roemer and Adm. John Lehman led a recent meeting of the MacArthur Foundation-funded Nuclear Security Study Group that focused on how to increase bi-partisan cooperation on nuclear non-proliferation issues. During the NSSG meeting in the Cannon House Office Building, hosted Congressmen Adam Schiff and Mac Thornberry, eight Members of Congress met with the 9/11 Commissioners discussed the recently passed 9/11 Commission Implementation Act.

The Members of Congress discussed how to most effectively secure loose nuclear weapons grade material and how to improve international cooperation toward this goal.

After an hour of discussions, the bi-partisan group of Members of Congress from the committees with responsibility for nuclear proliferation issues agreed to establish a set of common priorities that can serve as the basis of future in depth discussions.

The Members of Congress agreed to continue meeting and establish staff to staff links to improve communication and understanding on nuclear security issues.
