A New Era for America: A Policy Retreat

The Center for National Policy conducted a Policy Retreat, “A New Era for America,” for its strongest supporters. The event brought together experts in the fields of national security and the economy in order to look ahead to the changes coming to Washington that will affect government, industry and individuals alike.  Congresswoman Jane Harman opened the retreat with remarks about the importance of bipartisanship in meeting major national security challenges. DNI’s Deputy Director for Analysis and Chairman of the National Intelligence Council, Dr. Tom Fingar, spoke about how America’s intelligence community must respond to changes in the global security environment in a presentation titled “Mapping the Global Future.” Former White House Chiefs of Staff Leon Panetta and Andrew Card discussed the changing politics of Washington, DC, and what is required for effective leadership and policymaking. Presidential Historian Robert Dallek  shared anecdotes and examples of the defining characteristics of America’s best presidents in a presentation entitled “Character and Experiences of U.S. Presidents.”

General James N. Mattis, USMC, former Commander of the 1st Marine Division during the battle of Fallujah and currently Commander of both NATO’s Allied Command Transformation and U.S. Joint Forces Command, then discussed how the military can best meet the national security and transformation challenges of the 21st century in the face of evolving and transforming threats to our country.

House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer and CNP’s President, former Congressman and 9/11 Commissioner Tim Roemer, wrapped up the day’s events with a conversation about what issues will be the most pressing for whoever wins the 2008 election, and the politics and policies that will guide the 111th Congress.
