A CNP Panel Discussion With U.S. Senator Jeff Bingaman, Thomas Petrie and Vijay Vaitheeswaran

May 22, 2006

Senator Jeff Bingaman joined prominent energy sector strategist Thomas Petrie and Economist energy correspondent Vijay Vaitheeswaran to discuss ways the United States can move towards a more secure and prosperous energy economy. Sen. Bingaman, ranking member of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, identified the four most likely avenues for congressional action on energy policy in the remainder of this legislative session: consumer protection, incentives for alternative energy, incentives for efficient vehicles and appliances, and tax-based efforts to increase market certainty. Petrie and Vaitheeswaran joined in a call for Congress to learn the lessons of the 1970s and ‘80s, avoid fixing prices and picking winners and instead let the market do the heavy lifting in the coming energy transition.
