Next Steps on North Korea
A CNP Conversation with Michael Green and Daniel Poneman
November 2, 2006

Speaking only days after the North Korean government of Kim Jung-Il agreed to resume participation in the Chinese-hosted Six Party Talks, CNP was pleased to gather two of Washington's leading North Korea hands for a well-attended session. Featured in the event were Michael Green, former senior director for East Asian affairs at the National Security Council and Daniel Poneman, former senior director for non-proliferation at the National Security Council.
Green, who served in the current administration and Poneman, who served under President Clinton, agreed on a number of issues. In particular, they agreed that since 1994 America's military options vis-a-vis North Korea are now considerably constrained. The result, they note, is that the answer to unravelling the North Korea nuclear crisis will be found at the intersection of American and Chinese strategic interests.
